BMW Motorrad launched the challenge in 2008 and has been celebrating the #SpiritOfGS every since: riding enjoyment, adventure, and challenge.

The unique feature of the International GS Trophy is that it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. These intense challenges, in which participants demonstrate their knowledge and riding prowess, are all about team spirit and skill. And en route to the finish line, you will camp under the stars, ride through uncharted territory, and encounter exciting cultures. How do you qualify for this experience?
The most talented riders in a country demonstrate their skills in a series of qualifying races. They might be called on to manoeuvre a GS over a broken bridge and through deep sand. Hoist it over rocky riverbeds and tree trunks. The races also involve GPS navigation exercises, general knowledge questions about the GS, and technical tests, such as how to change a tyre under time pressure.
The experience finally kicks off after a long period of preparation for everyone who has qualified. Depending on the location, riders should expect high mountain passes, gravel roads, rain forests or sandy passages. but in all cases, these are the world's most amazing motorcycling destinations: Tunisia, South Africa, Patagonia, Canada, Thailand, Mongolia, New Zealand, Albania – and in 2024 it is going to Namibia.
Several intensive daily stages on challenging tracks and with demanding special tests are part of everyday life during the International GS Trophy race. Riders also receive a perfectly equipped BMW motorcycle for the duration of the race. And they are rewarded with an unforgettable experience. What they take home is new knowledge, skills, and friendships for life.
